For today’s Restaurant Review I went a little bit off the highway 101 when I paid a visit to Homestyle Hawaiian. It’s located on the North side of Oceanside Blvd just east of Highway 5. While it is situated on the end of a strip mall across from a car wash, once you are inside you get the vibe you are in Hawaii. Lots of Hawaiian pictures, surfboards, and tropical memorabilia.
It seems to be very authentic representation of Hawaiian food not like some of the other places I have been too. I walked up to the counter to order and they let me know when my food was ready. I ordered the Spam Musubi ($2.25 each) and a 2 item combo plate ($13.95) with the Korean Chicken and the Kolbi (thinly sliced marinated beef short ribs). The combo plate came with white rice and macaroni salad.
First off the Spam Musubi, which is grilled Spam with white rice wrapped in seaweed and topped with a sweet sauce. It was delicious. I have always wanted to try it and I am so glad I did. I scarfed down the Musubi and then started on the Combe plate. The Korean chicken which was Marinated dark meat, fried with a crunchy topping. It was amazing. I can’t wait to eat it again. The short ribs had great flavor as it was very well marinated but it was way to fatty for me. While there at least 10 customers came in to get either the Shaved Ice or the Dole Whip. Both looked sweet, cold and refreshing.
I really wanted to try one but I was too full and it’s not something you can take to go for later. I will save some room next time. Overall a great place that is reasonably priced and authentic. A must try.
